In most cases, bad breath comes from the mouth. Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene is very important to prevent bad breath.

What is bad breath?

Your mouth contains bacteria which break down food debris. This breakdown process generates bad-smelling gases, known as volatile sulphur compounds.

Causes of bad breath

There are many causes of bad breath, and one of them can be poor oral hygiene. Bacteria build-up between your teeth and in your mouth can release gas with an unpleasant odour as tiny pieces of food are broken down. These plaque bacteria can also cause tooth decay and inflamed gums if you do not brush and clean between your teeth regularly.

Bad breath can also be caused by strongly flavoured food and strong-smelling drinks such as coffee and alcohol. Bad breath caused by eating and drinking is often temporary. You can avoid this by not eating these types of food and drinks too frequently.

Dieting is another cause for bad breath, due to the body breaking down fat and producing chemicals called ketones which can be smelled on your breath.
Medication and some medical conditions can be a source of bad breath. If you suffer from dry mouth or gum inflammation bacteria may build up in your mouth and cause bad breath.

Treating bad breath

Depending on the cause of your bad breath the treatment can vary. Usually, good oral hygiene is effective – cleaning your gums and teeth twice a day, as well as cleaning between your teeth with interdental brushes or dental floss. Use a tongue cleaner to prevent the build-up of bacteria on your tongue and reduce bad breath.

Visit your dentist for regular check-ups of your oral hygiene. Your dentist can recommend you the best way to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy and will help you remove plaque build-up.

How to prevent bad breath

The most efficient way to prevent bad breath is to maintain a good daily oral hygiene routine. 

  • Brush your teeth with a gentle toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day.
  • Use an interdental brush or dental floss to clean between the teeth, where the most bacteria hide.
  • Clean your tongue to remove bacteria from the tongue surface.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for a check-up of your oral hygiene.
