MEDIA STATEMENT FROM TEPE UK

TePe UK’s response to the ‘New Guidelines on Preventing Gum Disease’ published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JCP) following the XI European Workshop in Periodontology.

Elaine Tilling, TePe’s head of clinical education says: “At TePe, we welcome the report following the XI European Workshop in Periodontology.  One of the key outcomes of the event hosted by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) was that there is no evidence that the use of dental floss is effective in patients with gingivitis or periodontitis, but the use of interdental brushes (IDBs) should be advocated by oral health professionals.

The report states: ‘the daily use of inter-dental brushes (IDBs) have proven efficacy in maintaining gum health and are preferable to flossing wherever possible’.

Elaine continues: “The key finding in this report is the need to raise awareness of the range of solutions and methods to help prevent oral diseases occurring. It is not a case of one size fits all when it comes to oral care. Flossing should only be encouraged for patients whose interdental space (the space between your teeth) is too tight for IDBs to pass through effectively. IDBs should be recommended where possible for thorough cleaning.

“TePe are working hard to raise awareness of the benefits of making interdental brushing part of your everyday routine and would encourage everybody to speak to their hygienist or dentist for advice on using IDBs and simple preventive advice for your oral and general health.”

The XI European Workshop in Periodontology was held in La Granja de San Ildefonso, Segovia, Spain in November 2014 and the outcome of the event is published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JCP) on May 8, 2015.
